Years after his tragic passing, comedian and actor Bernie Mac is being honored with a street named after him in his hometown of Chicago.

According to WBBM Newsradio, west 69th Street, where Mac grew up has inherited his name and is now called Bernie Mac Street after Tuesday’s dedication ceremony.

Born in 1957, in Chicago, Mac grew up on the South Side. At 19, Mac began telling jokes as a standup comic in his home city.

Mac starred in the hit Fox TV comedy series “The Bernie Mac Show” from 2001 to 2006, and is also known for his comedic role in stand-up comedy film “Kings of Comedy.”

Mac passed away August 9, 2008.
