Radio One Richmond was pround to sponsor the 2012 African American Trailblazers in Virginia History. Congratulations to all winners present and who have passed away. View the great trailblazers from Virginia brought to you by the Library of Virginia.

I was honored to learn all about the achievements of great Virginians. I didn’t know that the country’s first African American filmmaker, Oscar Micheaux was from Roanoke, Virginia. He produced at least six silent movies at his film office in Roanoke.

I didn’t know that Yvonne Miller of Norfolk was elected the Africian American woman to the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate. Also, I didn’t know that Irene Morgan of Gloucester County, Virginia challenged Virginia law requiring segregated seating on interstate buses. Morgan’s determination resulted in the landmark ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States.
