There is nothing like doing some real hands-on research for a film role. Actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña ended up on the scene of a bloody gang shooting Wednesday night, while they were on a police ride-along with the LAPD researching for their new movie.

Reportedly, when Gyllenhaal and Peña arrived at the Southern L.A. crime scene, they found a victim that had been shot by his rival gang members.

The man was hospitalized for grazing bullet wounds, as well as wounds above his lip and on his arm, and is in stable condition.

No one was arrested on the scene.

The shooting reportedly took place at an anti-gang rally organized by a group trying to “reduce violence during the summer by keeping public parks open for gang-free activity.”

Gyllenhaal, 30, and Pena, 35, are prepping to play partners in an upcoming movie.

“Jake is doing research for ‘End of Watch’ and has been amazed by the professionalism of the LAPD,” Gyllenhaal’s publicist.
