Comedy clan The Wayans Brothers head to trial later this month (July 2011) to fight allegations the siblings plagiarized jokes written by a former assistant and published them as their own.

Jared Edwards, who worked for the Wayans family from 1995 to 2005, filed suit against Keenen Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans and St. Martin’s Press representatives in New York in December, 2009.

Edwards claims he wrote jokes about women who seek wealth and status through romance for his ‘You Know You’re a Golddigger…’ book in 2005. He pitched the project to the brothers, but alleges they rejected his idea before they published their own book four years later (in May 2009).

The copyright infringement case is now heading to trial and will kick off on July 12, 2011.

Jared Edwards is seeking unspecified damages.
